Sarah Stanton has been practicing law for more than twenty years, focusing on the field of higher education and healthcare since 2018.
Sarah is responsible for the research and regulatory portfolio at the University of Maryland College Park. Her core work includes advising the University Health Center, to include Sports Medicine; Counseling Center; Integrity and Responsible Conduct in Research; Research Compliance - Human Subjects & Conflicts of Interest; Office of Research Administration - Corporate sponsored agreements; Institute for Bioscience & Biotechnology Research; xFoundry; Innovate, Design, and Engineer for America Factory; The Eastern Transportation Coalition; Environmental Safety, Sustainability and Risk - Institutional Biosafety Committee and Lab Safety Operations Committee, Hearing & Speech Clinic; and the Center for Healthy Families.
Before joining UMD in January 2026, Sarah served as counsel to the Department of Defense, most recently advising the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Prior to that she served as a Senior Acquisition Counsel to the Air Force and as a Master Mediator in the DoD's Alternative Dispute Resolution program. She taught fiscal law, ethics, and mediation for many years. She clerked for two summers at a large preeminent Ohio firm before moving to the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. She currently resides in North Chevy Chase with her husband and two children where she devotes herself to many local volunteer activities.
Sarah has expertise in a number of areas relevant to public institutions of higher education, including, academic and accreditation matters, business transactions, Federal assistance awards and contracting, intellectual property & technology transfer, health law, risk management & internal control, privacy, ethics, gifts, dispute resolution, open records, campus safety and security, research and regulatory compliance, and university policies and procedures.
Sarah graduated with honors from Ohio State University (B.S. in Business Administration 2002 and J.D. 2005) where she was the recipient of the Moritz Leadership Award and the Past Editors' Award from the Ohio State Journal on Dispute Resolution.
